About Mental Health Nurse roles
Mental health nursing is a recognised specialty within nursing in Australia. Registered Nurses working in mental health develop expertise in psychiatric assessment, risk assessment, medication management, and therapeutic engagement. The Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN) offers a credentialling program for experienced practitioners.
Mental health nurses work in acute inpatient wards, community mental health teams, crisis assessment and treatment teams (CATT), forensic settings, and primary care. They often work closely with psychiatrists and allied health professionals as part of multidisciplinary teams.
There is strong demand for mental health nurses across all states, particularly in community and crisis roles. Experienced nurses can access credentialled Mental Health Nurse (MHN) status, which enables Medicare-rebated consultations in some settings.
Typical salary
$75k – $110k AUD
Public sector rates follow state nursing awards. Credentialled Mental Health Nurses and NUM roles attract higher salaries.
Registration
AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse required. ACMHN credentialling is advantageous for senior roles.
Qualifications typically required
- Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent AHPRA-registered qualification
- AHPRA Registered Nurse registration
- Mental health clinical experience (typically 2+ years for specialist roles)
- ACMHN Credentialled Mental Health Nurse (CMHN) for senior positions
Career pathway
Nurses enter mental health from general nursing or directly through graduate programs with a mental health rotation. Career progression leads to Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Unit Manager, Clinical Nurse Consultant, or Nurse Practitioner roles. Credentialled MHN status supports independent practice.
