About Trauma

Trauma presentations — including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, and trauma-related dissociation — are pervasive across the mental health system. Key populations include veterans and emergency responders, survivors of domestic and family violence, people with histories of childhood abuse and neglect, refugees and asylum seekers, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people affected by intergenerational trauma. Complex trauma in particular is one of the most common presentations in community mental health and social services.

Australia has invested significantly in trauma treatment capacity through Phoenix Australia (formerly the Australian Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health), which leads clinical guidelines, workforce training, and research. The Open Arms program provides free counselling and psychological services to current and former ADF members and their families. State governments fund trauma-specific programs within community mental health, domestic violence, and refugee health services.

Evidence-based trauma treatments include Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), and Trauma-Focused CBT (TF-CBT). Many practitioners undertake post-graduate training in one or more of these modalities. Trauma-informed care — understanding how to avoid re-traumatisation and build safety — is now an expectation across the whole mental health and human services workforce, not just for specialist trauma clinicians.
