About AOD / Addiction

Alcohol and other drugs work sits at the intersection of mental health, public health, and social services. Practitioners in this field work with people experiencing harmful use, dependence, and withdrawal from substances including alcohol, methamphetamine, opioids, cannabis, and prescription medications. The majority of people in AOD services also experience significant mental health difficulties — known as comorbidity or dual diagnosis.

Australia's AOD sector is delivered through a mix of government health services, community-managed organisations, and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs). Services range from harm reduction programs such as needle and syringe programs and naloxone distribution, through to residential withdrawal management, therapeutic communities, and long-term recovery support.

The AOD workforce spans Certificate IV-qualified AOD workers through to clinical specialists including nurses, social workers, psychologists, and psychiatrists with addictions expertise. Motivational interviewing, brief intervention, and trauma-informed practice are core competencies across the sector. The growing focus on methamphetamine, ice-related psychosis, and synthetic drug presentations is shaping current workforce needs.

Workforce demand

Strong and persistent demand, particularly for dual diagnosis specialists and practitioners with methamphetamine and ice-related experience. Rural and regional AOD roles are consistently hard to fill.
